Zohran Mamdani Vows a 'Dawn' for NYC in First Address
On his inauguration day in the mayor's office, Zohran Mamdani committed to “reinvent” New York City, declaring “a fresh chapter” and an ambitious start to his administration.
A Groundbreaking Leader
The young political star, who was a virtually unknown state assemblyman, has become the city's first Muslim mayor. He additionally marked a milestone by being the first to be take the oath of office using the Islamic holy text.

Traditionally, New York mayors are judged on their ability in providing basic services: sanitation, curbing the rat infestation, repairing potholes, and ensuring smooth transit operation.
Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams touted his administration's public safety record, citing historically low numbers of homicides and gun violence in 2025, with 301 homicides reported.
As his administration begins, Mamdani and his wife will move from their Astoria apartment to the historic Gracie Mansion. The outgoing mayor offered a quirky piece of advice about a reputed friendly ghost in the home, which reportedly only troubles those who do not act to “do right by the city.”
Mamdani concluded his address with a simple statement: “The work has only just begun.”
