Uche Ignites Dominant Crystal Palace Triumph at Shelbourne.
Even though embarking on their maiden continental campaign, Crystal Palace are learning at a rapid pace. Missing key players like forward Jean-Philippe Mateta and defender Daniel Muñoz, the Eagles left Dublin with a comfortable result that all but secures them a spot in the Europa Conference League qualifying rounds.
A further victory in their upcoming match against Finland's KuPS ought to be sufficient to secure straight entry to the last 16, especially after a previous setback against Strasbourg.
Squad Members Seize the Opportunity
This match provided a chance for several Palace's fringe talent to shine. Christantus Uche, in only his second beginning since arriving on loan from Getafe, notched the scoring with a clinical goal. Forward Eddie Nketiah added a another, scoring for the second consecutive match.
A Shelbourne side that had finished their domestic season proved no match even for a largely second-string Palace outfit. The visitors were already depleted by the news that Mateta and Muñoz are out with leg injuries.
Dominance Established from the Outset
Despite torrential rain in Dublin, Palace quickly took control. A slick passing sequence in the 11th minute, sparked by Daichi Kamada's clever pass, let Nketiah to lay on Uche for a straightforward tap-in.
Youngster Adam Wharton came close soon after, fizzing a powerful effort over the bar. Nketiah then appealed for a penalty after racing into the area, but the referee dismissed the appeals.
Ex-Arsenal striker did not have wait long to find his goal, tapping home from a yard out after Uche's effort had struck the post.
Shelbourne were clinging on desperately. Full-back Kameron Ledwidge was fortunate to escape a booking for a couple of agricultural challenges on Yeremy Pino, before Chris Richards struck the crossbar with a powerful header from a corner.
Pino Seals the Contest
The contest was as good as over eight minutes before half-time. Yeremy Pino meandered past a series of weak challenges before coolly slotting a shot past keeper Wessel Speel to extend the lead to 3-0.
After the break, coach Oliver Glasner took the chance to rest key individuals like Kamada and Wharton. Substitute Romain Esse almost scoring his very first touch, only to see his shot blocked.
Esse was incredibly unlucky later on, seeing one attempt crash off each posts before being clasped on the line. Uche also missed a sitter of a chance, indicating there is still scope for improvement in his game.
The only concern for Palace was a second-half injury to Justin Devenny, who was forced off. This allowed 17-year-old striker Benji Casey to earn his first-team debut, rounding off an otherwise perfect night for the visiting side.
