"Any idea when you're speaking to Haim?" a text arrives. "I was hoping to ask if I can be their newest bandmate."

However, there remains a single issue: I also longs to be Haim's fourth member. And we're far from alone. A host of famous fans have publicly petitioned for the honor.

One thing is obvious something is going on. Sisters Este, Danielle and Alana started their career doing sets at local delicatessens with their parents. Now they're multi-time Grammy contenders.

In the tradition of the best bands, they're a tight-knit unit. Their visuals often feature them striding in unison down the streets of Los Angeles. In concert, they perform with such unfettered exuberance you can't help but think, "I wish to be part of that, too."

"The amount of times on tour that young girls told us and said, 'After your show, I bought a drum kit'," says Alana, the most junior of the sisters. "That's the ultimate honour. That is recognition in itself. Our mission is accomplished if we can motivate young girls to make music."

"Therefore anyone are welcome to be the fourth member of Haim."

Historic Nod

The group have called into their homes, where they're resting up after an major tour in promoting their latest album, I Quit.

They're currently processing the news it's been in the running for Best Rock Album at the Grammys – with Haim the pioneering all-woman band ever in the running for the award.

"I tune into the announcements every year, so it almost feels like a surreal movie when your name is announced," says Alana. "I needed to phone my sisters to say, 'Did we just hear this correctly or am I imagining things'?"

The significance of the accolade is deeply felt by the trio.

"We deliberately set out to make a guitar-driven album this time, so it's a major step," continues Alana. "Yet we're just thankful for the female artists that paved the way."

Emotional Upheaval and Candor

The project came out of a period of transition. All three sisters ended up single, and the music inhabits that unique in-between place where you're happy to be free, but not yet ready to let go.

The words follow breakups and farewells. The sisters seek love, but not the kind of love they've experienced. You can hear them determining in real life who they want to be.

"I love summary, yes," agrees Danielle. "I Quit is kind of like a personal statement. You have to make an effort in ignoring the noise and saying, 'I don't give what people think'."

Development of Music

That developed toughness required a new sound – more unpolished and powerful than anything the band had done before.

For Danielle, who helped produce the album, that started with the drum sound.

"Percussion is such a detailed thing, and I am so passionate about it," she emphasizes.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the name of our biography," jokes Alana. "I've said it, our albums won't commence until we find the ideal drum sound."

Anecdotes and Shared Humor

The band's openness fueled the album's promotional campaign, where the sisters revealed some of their personal horror stories.

Someone broke up with Este over a medical consideration. Alana recalled a story of travelling to celebrate New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a casual gesture at midnight.

"During these setbacks, you just feel like there's no hope," explains Alana. "Therefore to be able to find humor in those stories and have them tell you more outrageous stories, it's so amazing."

A Confident Path

It's not difficult sense a change in the band. These days, Haim are more certain of their position in the industry.

They're major draws, with hit albums and an worldwide following.

Yet Haim will forever be their top priority.

"Me and my siblings have been making music since I was a young child," shares Alana. "There is no other path that we were destined for. And I'm really thankful we've gotten here and we're still making music."
