Micky van de Ven scored on two occasions as Tottenham extended their winning streak in away games in the top division and delivered Everton their initial loss at Hill Dickinson Stadium.

Everton were unbeaten in their last five matches at their recently opened stadium at the dockside location, having left Goodison Park behind after more than a century at the conclusion of last season.

But Tottenham's leader the Dutchman pounced twice from corners in the first half to put their strong form at risk, and they were failed to mount a comeback before the midfielder - assisted by former Toffees attacker the Brazilian - nodded in a third to seal the victory.

Jake O'Brien thought he had equalized the tally a short while after Van de Ven's opener, directing a powerful header past the Spurs keeper from an set-piece.

Beto, in the meantime, failed to convert a number of chances, while the Italian goalkeeper made a series of fine saves to ensure the London club went five away games without defeat in the Premier League.

But the VAR stepped in, instructing Craig Pawson to review the goal on the screen and the official decided that Jack Grealish and the attacker were in offside positions and had impeded with the Tottenham goalkeeper.

The win moves Thomas Frank's team into third place in the Premier League, five points off north London rivals and leaders the Gunners.

Everton remain 14th and sit six points ahead of the drop zone.

Tottenham analysis: Van de Ven fulfils role at both ends of the field

After a drab weekday display in the Champions League against the French side, where they mustered a only two shots on goal, the manager chose the French striker up front instead of former Toffees player Richarlison.

The new arrival was unable to make much of an impact before being replaced for the substitute after an hour on the field, but it emerged he proved unnecessary in the final outcome.

Defender Van de Ven transformed into an attacking force to be reckoned with.

Spurs' opening strike came from a cleverly executed set-piece play, with Rodrigo Bentancur heading the ball back across the six-yard box for an free the defender to head home.

And the captain - filling in as skipper in the Argentine's unavailability - added his second in first-half stoppage time as he rose above the England keeper to head home.

Van de Ven was just as impressive in defensive duties, partnering effectively with his defensive colleague as the duo dealt excellently with the numerous deliveries sent their way by Everton.

Toffees breakdown: Everton lacking finishing touch

The club's recent stadium had been a happy hunting ground, but it seems the novelty may have faded slightly and supporters headed to the exits after the midfielder's third for Spurs.

The break in Everton's winning streak at home won't be a major worry for David Moyes, but their striker situation will be.

Beto and the other striker - the Everton's two recognised strikers - had scored only a single goal between them before Sunday's match.

And they were unable to add to that miserable record on a wet and gloomy night on in Liverpool.

The striker's performance was epitomized when he chose to overhead kick a clear chance from near the goal, even with having space and time to reposition for a simpler shot that would have tested Vicario.

Barry, as well, was unable to make an impact after replacing Beto in the second half.

It was not for a lack of chance. Most of the home side's attacks came through Grealish and the forward, who relentlessly whipped threatening crosses into the Tottenham penalty area.
